Parking Techniques Taught by Red Deer Driving School

Up Hill Parking

  1. Close Curbside Stop –Right Lane change, approach curb at soft angel, very slow, when very close to curb (10-15cm) drift little forward with gentle left turn to make the car straight and stop (Don’t worry about the position of steering. 90% of hill parking is achieved if you are stopped very close to curb)

  2. Confirm Car Close to Curb – None or very little gap visible in right mirror between car and curb. If not close, then follow steps to bring car closer to curb

  3. Full Left Turn while brakes pressed

  4. Gear to “N”

  5. Left shoulder check, Rear window check

  6. Controlled release of brake and car rolls back and softly settles with the curb and stop

  7. Gear to “P”

  8. Engage emergency brake

Moving out from Up Hill park

  1. Shift Gear to “D”, release emergency brake

  2. Left mirror check, left shoulder check, left signal

  3. When safe, gradually & constantly start moving to drive lane while steering the car straight

Down Hill Parking

  1. Close Curbside Stop - as above

  2. Confirm Car Close to Curb - as above

  3. Full Right Turn while brakes pressed

  4. Gear to “N”

  5. Right shoulder check, Rear window check

  6. Controlled release of brake and car rolls forward and softly settles with the curb and stop

  7. Gear to “P”

  8. Engage emergency brake

Moving out from Up Hill park

  1. Change Gear to “R”, release emergency brake

  2. While looking back reverse car very slow only for about 1 feet and stop (May have to give little gas)

  3. Straighten the steering by two left turns

  4. Gear to “D”

  5. Left mirror check, left shoulder check, left signal

  6. When safe, gradually & constantly start moving to drive lane

Moving Car Closer to Curb – 2 Methods

Ensure car straight along with curb. If big gap is seen in right mirror between the car and curb, then need to move car closer to curb

By Moving Backward

  1. Gear to "R", one steering turn right, left shoulder check, if safe, while looking in right mirror, drift car back till you cannot see the edge of curb in right mirror and stop

  2. One left turn, drift back approx 3 feet and stop

  3. One left turn, drift back until you see the curb in right mirror and stop

  4. One right turn and the wheels are straight, gear to "P", engage emergency brake

By Moving Forward

  1. keeping balance between viewing curb in right mirror and viewing curb from front window, drift car towards curb and drive straight for very small distance along with curb and stop (It is a guess work and needs judgement and experience)

Parallel Parking

  1. Straight, Slow & Right Signal - Approach at slow speed with right signal on & position your car parallel to the parked vehicle about 1 meter apart

  2. Align Back of Both Vehicles - Stop when you see left tail light of parked vehicle through small right side window of own vehicle

  3. Gear to “R”

  4. Steer one turn right

  5. Find 45 degree Angle - Look approx half left and select any point on your half left line of sight

  6. Checks - Back window check, Left shoulder check (give way to overtaking vehicles and on-coming vehicles)

  7. Reverse till 45 Angle – Reverse very slowly while glancing to back and towards your 45 degree point and stop when you face your 45 degree point straight ahead of you

  8. Steer one turn left (straighten your wheels)

  9. Reverse while glancing back and towards parked vehicle, reverse slowly till you see the left rear edge of parked vehicle which is at your door height, from then right corner of your front wind screen & stop

  10. Steer complete left

  11. Reverse slowly while looking back, occasional glance in right mirror till vehicle is parallel to curb and stop

  12. Straighten wheels (two right turns)

  13. Gear on “P” and engage emergency brakes

Moving out of Parallel Parking

  1. Shift Gear to “D”, release emergency brake, steer full left

  2. Left mirror check, left shoulder check, left signal

  3. When safe, gradually move to drive lane and steer right to straighten the car
